The establishment of the diocese is earlier than 1115; thirty-five were the bishops known from its foundation to 1585, in which year it remained vacant; among them are remembered James Kennedy (1438-40), Gavin Douglas (1516-21) and John Hamilton (1545-47); the last was Robert Crichton.
The ancient cathedral of D., situated near the river Tay, was begun in 1220 and completed at the end of the 15th century; it was seriously damaged by Robert II of Scotland (1316-90); then a part of it was reduced to a Presbyterian church.
