ELIAB (Heb. "Il My God Is Father"). - Name of seven persons of the Old Testament.

1. Son of Helon and chief of the tribe of Zebulun at the time of the census in the desert of Sinai (Num. 1:9; 2:7; 10:16). Like the other tribal chiefs he offered rich gifts to Yahweh (Num. 7:24-29).

2. Son of Phallu of the tribe of Reuben, and father of Dathan and Abiram, leaders of the expedition against the authority of Moses (Num. 16:1).

3. Firstborn of Jesse: at his sight Samuel asked whether he was perhaps standing before the Lord's anointed

(1 Chron. 2:13); he was of a proud disposition (1 Sam. 17:13, 18); his daughter or niece Abigail married Rehoboam (2 Chron. 11:18).

4. Levite of the lineage of Korah, ancestor of Samuel (1 Chron. 6:27): his true name must be Elihu (1 Sam. 1:1).

5. One of the warriors of the tribe of Gad, who presented themselves to David to render him services in the persecution of Saul (1 Chron. 12:9-14).

6. Levite, musician of the second order, of the time of David: he played the nebbel or harp.

7. Son of Nathanael, ancestor of Judith (Jdt. 8:1; Vulg. Enan).
