Four. The sons of Merari were not very numerous, (Numbers 4:44.) and they had the heaviest parts of the tabernacle to carry. The metal alone would weigh 274,875 Roman pounds, of 12 ounces each; not to mention the pillars, etc. If 100 waggons carried each 3000 pounds, and every man 50, they would not carry one half; so that the people must have furnished them with many more waggons besides these four of the princes. Mortar. Hebrew caph, which the Vulgate commonly renders phiala, "a cup," (Menochius) may signify a spoon for incense, as it generally accompanies the censer, 3 Kings 7:20. It means literally "the palm of the hand." The high priest took his hands full of incense on the day of expiation, Leviticus 16:12. But on other occasions, a spoon was probably used to throw incense on the altar, or on the coals which were burning in the censers. (Calmet)

Yet to the choice of Christ’s ministers no heed is paid. And let no one allege against me the wealth of the temple in Judæa, its table, its lamps, its censers, its dishes, its cups, its spoons,
7:1
And he set it up — not by himself, but through Beseleel and his associates: whence it is evident that there is here a hysteron proteron. For the oblation of the princes, which is narrated in this chapter, was made before the census of the people, which is described in chapter 1. For the erection and consecration of the tabernacle was completed on the first day of the first month of the second year, as is evident from Exodus XL, 18. On that same day was made the consecration of Aaron the high priest, and of his sons the priests, as is evident from the same chapter of Exodus. On that same day also began the oblation of the princes, made in the tabernacle already erected, as is said here. Therefore according to the order of history, this chapter should have been immediately joined to Exodus. Wherefore here the order of subject matter rather than of history is observed: for when Moses had described the tabernacle and altars in Exodus, he subjoined in Leviticus the description of sacrifices, the consecrations of priests, and their functions to be performed in the tabernacle and its altars; then in Numbers he added the census of the people, and of the Levites, so that he might distinguish their ministries, soon the rite of Nazarites and their oblation: for the Nazarites were consecrated to God, just as the priests and Levites; and finally on the occasion of the oblations prescribed for the Nazarites, he appropriately passes over, or rather returns to the oblation of the princes, although it had been made much earlier. We shall see a similar hysteron proteron in the two following chapters. Therefore, what R. Solomon, and from him Lyran, put forward, namely a twofold erection of the tabernacle; one daily, which was made daily during the first seven days of the consecration of the priests; another stable and permanent, which was made on the eighth day from the first erection of the tabernacle, when the consecration of the priests was completed: and so from this stable erection, namely from the eighth day, this oblation of the twelve princes was to be begun: this, I say, appears to be invented, and is contrary to Holy Scripture in this place. For that daily erection of the tabernacle would have been useless and very troublesome, indeed in so many boards, columns and curtains almost impossible, as Abulensis rightly shows.
Lyran objects: Before the eighth day the consecration of Aaron and his sons the priests had not yet been completed; therefore during the first seven days, Moses ought to have immolated the victims of the princes, not Aaron, nor his sons, since their consecration had not yet been completed: but Moses alone could not do this; for each prince offered daily twenty-one victims to be immolated. I answer: During the first seven days Moses alone immolated, that is slew and slaughtered the victims, which he could easily do alone: but Aaron and his sons, after the immolation of the victim, flayed it, cut it up, washed it, and placed it on the altar. For these things could also be done by the Levites then, when they were not sufficient for the priests, as is evident from II Paralipomenon XXIX, 34.
Since there were twelve princes of the 12 tribes, this oblation of theirs lasted through as many days; for on each day one prince offered his gifts. Therefore during the first seven days, when the consecration of Aaron and his sons was not yet perfect, Moses by himself offered the sacrifices of seven princes: but on the eighth day, when the prince of the sons of Manasse, namely Gamaliel, offered, then Aaron, as now consecrated high priest, offered both his sacrifice and those of the four remaining princes that followed. Thus Abulensis.
7:2
The princes of Israel offered, etc., and the leaders of them who had been numbered (that is to say, The 12 princes offered, who were the leaders of the twelve tribes, namely of all the Israelites, who had been reviewed and numbered, not in this chapter 1: for that numbering was later than this oblation of the princes, as I have already said; but earlier, namely in the former census of the people, which was made in Exodus XXXVIII, verse 25. These therefore 12 princes, or leaders, offered together on the first day) to the Lord (for carrying the vessels of the tabernacle through the desert) six covered wagons. — "Covered," so that namely these sacred vessels could not be seen by the people, nor be harmed by rain, hail, etc.
7:3
For each wagon was drawn by two oxen. For the Jews used oxen and asses rather than horses, as I said in Exodus XIII, 13. One wagon was offered by two leaders. — Two princes: for since six wagons were offered by twelve princes, it follows that two princes each offered one wagon. But the oxen, namely twelve, were offered by individual princes.
7:8
Four other wagons, and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, — because they had heavier burdens, namely of all the columns, besides other burdens of the boards, bases, etc., so much so that Abulensis thinks that all their burdens could not have been placed on these four wagons, but some ought to have been carried by them. See what is said in Exodus XXXVIII, at the end. Cultus, — that is ministry; for this is in Hebrew aboda. Under the hand (under the care, power and authority) of Ithamar, — that is to say, Ithamar presided over the Gersonites and Merarites, and their vessels.
7:9
Because they serve in the Sanctuary. — "In the Sanctuary," that is, in the Holy Place, and in the Holy of Holies, as if to say the Caathites serve the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies, namely by guarding the vessels which were in the Holy Place and in the Holy of Holies; wherefore I wish these vessels to be carried not in wagons, but upon their shoulders, and this on account of the sanctity and reverence of the vessels.
7:11
Each of the princes on each day offered gifts for the dedication of the altar, — namely of holocausts, which besides the anointing common with the other vessels of the tabernacle, had another special dedication for seven days, namely a daily anointing and sacrifices, prescribed in Exodus chapter XXIX, verses 36 and 37. Whence also daily, in the dedication of the whole tabernacle indeed, but especially of this altar, the princes offered their gifts in turn and individually.
This offering therefore began on the first day of the erection and consecration of the tabernacle, and lasted for 12 days. For there were twelve princes offering, of whom each day one offered his gifts. For the common gifts, namely six wagons and twelve oxen, all the princes offered together on the first day. Moreover these princes offered their gifts in that order which they had in the camps and standards, Numbers II: whence on the first day the prince of the tribe of Judah offered; on the second, the prince of Issachar; on the third, the prince of Zebulun, and so forth thereafter. Finally they offered the same gifts, lest any rivalry or ambition should arise among them.
God commanded the princes, in the name of their tribes, to offer these gifts, first, that He might sharpen in them the zeal of religion and sacred things; second, that He might show that laypeople and the people are bound by the law of nature and of God to these sacrifices, and to provide the expenses necessary both for maintaining the tabernacle and for feeding the priests. For the priests performed the sacred duties in the name of all the people: wherefore they ought to be sustained by them, and to receive all the expenses necessary for the worship of God. Finally, that He might teach that liberality especially befits princes. Artaxerxes Longimanus, so called because he had one hand longer than the other, used to say, "it is more kingly to add than to take away." Let kings and princes therefore be long-handed in giving. For this reason the Hebrews call princes nedibim, from the root nadab, that is, spontaneous, voluntary, liberal. Nedibim therefore is the same as beneficent. And this is what Christ says in Luke XXII, 25: "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent." Beneficent, in Hebrew nedibim, that is, princes, because liberality especially befits them. Thus Ptolemy, king of Egypt, was surnamed Evergetes, that is, beneficent, because he had restored to Egypt with arms the idols of his country which had been carried away by Cambyses.
7:14
Mortar. — In Hebrew it is caph, which our Interpreter elsewhere translates as a bowl; but because another word, which signifies a bowl, preceded here, hence our Interpreter translates caph as mortar, as if to say, a small bowl for holding incense. For caph signifies a small curved and concave vessel (for caphaph means to curve), in which frankincense, or incense, or something of this kind was placed. Thus Vatablus and others.
7:15
Besides the vessels, each prince offered 21 victims, and of every kind, namely an ox, a ram and a lamb for a holocaust; a goat for sin; but for peace offerings two oxen, five rams, five goats, and five lambs: which Moses immolated in the first seven days; but on the eighth day Aaron began to exercise the priesthood, and immolated the victims of the eighth prince. On the same day Aaron also immolated the victims of the people, which namely the people offered on account of the new consecration of the priests. On the same day also fire came down from heaven, which consumed the sacrifices of Aaron. Finally on the same day Nadab and Abihu were slain, Leviticus IX and X.
7:18
On the second day Nathanael offered. — "Offered" the same things, or such things as Nahshon had offered on the first day: which in the Hebrew manner are here recounted and repeated at length for each prince. Whence the Hebrews in their text do not substitute points here, inasmuch as they substituted them once at the beginning in the first offering of Nahshon. Thus we see in Exodus, all things which were commanded to be made in the construction of the tabernacle in chapters XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, are repeated at length and narrated as if already made in chapters XXXVI, XXXVII, XXXVIII, XXXIX. The same custom of repetition exists among the Orientals, Muscovites and other peoples.
7:84
These were offered in the dedication of the altar by the princes, on the day in which it was consecrated. — "On the day," that is, at the time of the consecration, or "on the day they were offered," that is, they began to be offered: for this offering lasted for twelve days; but the consecration of the altar was completed on the first day.
7:89
And when Moses entered into the tabernacle of the covenant, to consult the oracle,—namely God sitting in the Holy of Holies, upon the mercy seat. Hence it is clear that Moses always had access to the Holy of Holies in matters of doubt, whereas to other priests the entrance to the Holy of Holies was open only once a year, namely on the day of expiation. For Moses was the legislator and the constant legate of God to the people: wherefore God spoke with Moses in human and sensible voice, flowing forth from the mercy seat, as is here said.
By this matter God signified to Princes, Prelates and Pastors, that in order to govern the people well, they ought frequently to have recourse to God through prayer, that they may be instructed by Him in matters of doubt. For thus Moses had recourse to the oracle, as St. Gregory teaches, II part. Pastor. cap. V. Thus Minos, legislator and king of the Cretans, was a conversant of Jupiter for nine years, says Plato; for the Gentiles feigned this of him. Plutarch relates in the Banquet of the Seven Sages, that they asked one another: "Who would be a good and blessed prince?" First Solon, he says, answered: He who converts the rule of one into a popular state of the republic for the citizens. Bias added: He who first obeys the laws of his country. Third Thales: He who dies old according to the order of nature. Fourth Anacharsis: He who alone is prudent. Fifth Cleobulus: He who trusts none of his household. Sixth Pittacus: He who so trains his subjects that they fear not him, but his cause. Last Chilo most excellently: He who meditates on nothing mortal, but all things immortal. This Moses learned by constantly conversing with God in the tabernacle. Thus the Blessed Thomas More, the wisest and most upright Chancellor of England, devoted much time daily to prayer, pious reading and meditation, conversing with God: and so when some difficult business was to be handled, he would receive the Holy Communion, that from it as from an oracle he might be directed, and strengthened to accomplish that matter rightly and faithfully according to God's law and mind; Stapleton testifies in the Life of More.
Moreover, in order that anyone may approach God's Sanctuary and oracle, three obstacles must be removed. "There are three things," says St. Bernard, serm. 5 On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, "which confound the eye of understanding, and exclude from the contemplation of true light: namely the darkness of sins, the remembrance of the same, and the care of earthly affections. Against this threefold disease there is a threefold remedy. For the first is cured through confession, the second through prayer, the third through rest." The same, serm. 23 in Canticles: "In this mystery, he says, and in this sanctuary of God," namely of prayer and contemplation, "if it should happen that any one of you is at some hour so rapt and so hidden, that neither the sense acting (as in the sick), nor the piercing care, nor the biting guilt, nor those things which are more difficult to remove, the phantasms of rushing bodily images, should avail to distract or disturb him; he will indeed be able, when he returns to us, to glory and say: The king hath brought me into his chambers." Hence Cassian, Collat. X, cap. IX and XIII, admonishes, "that we should be such before the time of prayer as we wish to be found praying: for it is necessary that the mind be formed in the time of its supplication from its present state." "For when," as St. Gregory says, X Moral. cap. XVII, "the mind has raised itself to the study of prayer, it suffers the images of those things to be reflected back, by which it was willingly pressed before in idleness."
