FALLOPPIO, GABRIELE. - Born in Modena in 1523, died in Padua on 9 October 1562. A pupil in Ferrara of Musa Brasavola, he renounced a canonry to devote himself to his beloved studies of anatomy and medicine. At the age of 24 (1547) he rose to the chair of anatomy at the University of Ferrara. He then moved to that of Pisa until, in 1551, the Republic of Venice called him as a lecturer at the University of Padua, where he subsequently held the chairs of anatomy, surgery, and simples. A man of great learning, often sought out for his services, he treated illustrious patients in Milan, Florence, and Rome; on journeys for his own instruction, he traveled to France and Greece.
His scientific work concerns mainly surgery and anatomy; but he also dealt with therapeutics, ideology, clinical medicine, and syphilis. His anatomical discoveries were countless; he was ingenious in prescribing new prophylactic, therapeutic, and orthopedic methods.
Among his writings: Observaciones anatomicas in libros quinque digesta (ibid. 1561); Expansia in librum Galeni de ossibus (Venice 1570); De compositione medicamentarum cui accesserunt tabulae eiusdem de cauterias (ibid. 1570); Compendium de anatome corporis humani (ibid. 1571).
