WILLIAM OF WARE. - English Franciscan, perhaps teacher of Duns Scotus, d. around 1300. He was probably a bachelor in theology at Oxford and commented on the Sentences there around 1290; then a doctor in Paris (F. Pelster contradicts this, Handschriftliches zu Skotus etc. in Franzisk. Studien, 10 [1929], pp. 1-32).
Of his Commentary on the Sentences, which is preserved in several manuscripts, some questions on the Immaculate Conception have been edited (Quaracchi 1904); De unitate Dei (edited by P. Muscat, in Antonianum, 2 [1927], pp. 335-50); on the motive of the Incarnation (edited by J. M. Bissen, in Etudes Franciscaines, 46 [1934], pp. 218-22, G. di W. affirms his independence from Aristotle, particularly regarding the theory of spiritual realities, but abandons many theses of medieval Augustinianism (necessity of illumination for intellectual knowledge; hylomorphic composition in spiritual substances). He admits a certain distinction between essence and being.
