GUIBERT, JOSEPH-HIPPOLYTE. - Cardinal, b. 13 Dec. 1802 at Aix in Provence, d. 8 July 1886 in Paris. Ordained a priest, he entered the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and carried out fruitful missionary work in the Cévennes, and continued it until 1835 as rector of the sanctuary of Notre-Dame-du-Laus in the Alps. Then in Corsica he was vicar general of the bishop of Ajaccio, Casanelli d'Istria, and founded and directed the major and the minor seminary.
Having gone to Paris to negotiate with the political authorities concerning his two seminaries, G. made an excellent impression on King Louis Philippe, who appointed him, though reluctant, bishop of Viviers. Transferred in 1857 to the archiepiscopal see of Tours, he took part in the Vatican Council and in 1871, after the killing of Archbishop Darboy, he was given the governance of the archdiocese of Paris. Created cardinal by Pius IX in the Consistory of 22 Dec. 1873, from 1877 onward he firmly opposed the anticatholic policy of the Third Republic.
