LAMBACH. - Benedictine abbey in Upper Austria, in the diocese of Linz; it has 5 incorporated parishes, an agricultural and horticultural school, and a retreat house.

St. Adalbero, count of Wels and L., later bishop of Würzburg, founded around 1040 in his native castle of L. a house for regular canons; but around 1056 he introduced Benedictine monks there from Gorze. Suppressed by Joseph II (1784), it was almost immediately re-established; during Nazism it was again suppressed (1941-45). The present church, built in the years 1652-1656, replaced two earlier ones, one Romanesque and the other Gothic; it has famous altarpieces by Sandrart. In the monastery rebuilt in Baroque forms between the 17th and 18th centuries, the summer refectory is noteworthy. The most famous abbot is Maximilian Pagl (1705-25).

Worth remembering, near L., is the famous shrine-church of Stadl-Paura, in honor of the Most Holy Trinity, which the said abbot Pagl had built (1714-24) by J. M. Prunner, of Linz.
