LOAYSA, JERÓNIMO de. - Dominican, first bishop and archbishop of Lima (Peru), b. at Trujillo (Estremadura, 1489?), d. at Lima on 25 Oct. 1575.
He studied at Coria, Seville and Valladolid; in 1529 he landed with a group of confreres at Tierra Firme (present-day Colombia), and with them he founded Santa Marta and Cartagena and made them centers of apostolate. After 5 years he returned to Spain to obtain from the government laws in favor of the Indians. He was still in his homeland when at the end of 1537 he was designated to succeed the first bishop of Cartagena, Tommaso de(l) Toro.
Consecrated at Valladolid the following year, he reached his see and at once set to work on the construction of the Cathedral. Shortly afterward he was transferred to the new see of Lima, of which he took possession in 1543. In 1546 the diocese of Lima was elevated to a metropolis and the titular received the archiepiscopal pallium shortly thereafter. In the 32 years spent at Lima the prelate had a life that was often difficult because of the disorders provoked by the greed of the conquerors and because of his tenacious defense of the natives, which earned him the title of "protector of the Indians." He had the new cathedral and various churches erected, and the seminary built. He founded the hospital of St. Anne (1549), where he lavished his charity and where he wished to be buried. He worked greatly for the erection of the University (1553). Lima, as a sign of gratitude toward this great benefactor of the Church and of civilization, dedicated a hospital to him in 1920.
