Massarini, Ippolito

MASSARINI, IPPOLITO. - Servite, theologian, b. in Lucca around the middle of the 16th century, d. in Rome in Jan. 1604. He taught theology in various places, especially at the University of Ferrara, for 25 years. He was also a prolific orator and, twice, provincial. Innocent IX, who had made use of him when he was nuncio in Venice, called him to Rome and appointed him his theologian. Clement VIII also made use of him in the de auxiliis controversy. At the age of 54 he was elected bishop of Irsina.

He wrote, among other things, a short treatise De voto paupertatis and a Life of St. Philip Benizi (Venice 1566). By order of Clement VIII, all his writings were preserved in the Vatican Library.
