MASSARINI, IPPOLITO. — Servite, theologian, born at Lucca around the middle of the 16th century, died at Rome in January 1604. He taught theology in various places, especially at the University of Ferrara, for 25 years. He was also a prolific preacher and twice served as provincial. Innocent IX, who had made use of him when he was nuncio at Venice, summoned him to Rome and appointed him his theologian. Clement VIII also made use of him in the controversy de auxiliis. At the age of 54 he was elected bishop of Irsina.
Among other works, he wrote a short treatise De voto paupertatis and a Life of 1. Filippo Benizi (Venice 1566). By order of Clement VIII, all his writings were preserved in the Vatican Library.
