MENSING (MENSINCK), JOHANN. - Dominican theologian, b. probably at Magdeburg, d. at Halberstadt in 1540. A religious in 1495, between the years 1515-17 he obtained his degrees in theology, in which in 1525 he was appointed professor at the University of Frankfurt. In 1534 he became superior of the province of Saxony and in 1539 he was promoted auxiliary bishop of Halberstadt. He opposed Luther and the other innovators energetically, above all through the preaching that he gave at Magdeburg from 1522 onward, at the court of Prince George of Anhalt and in other centers of Germany where the nascent heresy had penetrated.
Principal works: Von dem Opfer Christi yn der Messe (s. l. 1526) against Luther; Von dem Testament Christi unserers Herrn und Seligmachers (s. l. 1526), which is a warm appeal to the nobles of Saxony for the defense of the faith; De Ecclesiae Christi sacerdotio (s. l. 1532); and the Antiapologia (s. l. ca. 1534), against Melanchthon. Besides the confutation of the principal theses of Lutheranism, M. brought a new contribution to the theology of the Church and of the papacy.
