MONTE, PHILIPPE de. - Flemish polyphonist, b. at Mechelen in 1521 and d. at Prague in the summer of 1603. He was first in Naples, Rome, Antwerp, Genoa, and finally on 1 May 1568 he went to Vienna, as director of the Imperial Chapel.
At the age of 79 (in 1600) he published his last collection (VII) of 5-voice motets, and at the age of 80 he was still collaborating, with a madrigal, Il verno, in a collection by various authors (I diporti della villa, Venice 1601). In his vast output, besides the madrigals, the motets and masses stand out, animated by efforts directed at saving the languishing polyphony in a period of transition between the old Belgian polyphonic school and the new Italian monodic one, between which he is like a happy link. Among the masses, harmonious and vigorous, of an elevated and rich style, those entitled Emitte Domine, Si ambulavero, Quomodo dilexi, Ad modum, Benedictis et are worthy of particular mention. II de M. was greatly esteemed by his contemporaries and by posterity. Many of his books of motets and masses were printed, during his lifetime, at Venice, Rome, Antwerp, etc. Many works still remain unpublished in the principal libraries of Europe. New reprints of isolated compositions of his are found in recent collections.
