NOVELLI, PIETRO, detto il MONREALESE. - Painter, b. March 2, 1603 at Monreale, d. in August 1647 at Palermo, where he frequented Carrera's studio and soon moved from the post-Raphaelesque manner to the art of Van Dyck, who stayed in Palermo between the 22nd and the 24th and by whom he remained permanently influenced.
To the first Raphaelesque manner belongs the canvas with Christ, the Virgin and St. Anne in the church of the Benedictines at Catania; to the second, the Pentecost and the Annunciation in the Museum of Palermo, the frescoes in the refectory of S. Martino della Scala (1629) and in S. Andrea Corsini (1630). Among the works produced after his return to Sicily from Rome, where he was struck by the Caravaggesque manner of various painters, are remembered a Calling of St. Matthew at Leonforte, the beautiful St. Benedict Blessing the Loaves in the Benedictine monastery at Monreale, many portraits scattered in various Italian and foreign galleries, the St. Pellegrino of the Corsini in Rome, the Coronation of the Virgin in the Congregation of the Rosary at Palermo.
