OSBERT de CLARE. - English Benedictine theologian of the 12th century, b. at Clare (county of Suffolk). He became a monk of the abbey of Westminster and, around 1136, prior. He was an ardent, learned and skilful defender of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and promoted the proclamation of the feast, to which Roger, bishop of Salisbury, and Bernard, bishop of St. David, and many others strongly objected, although the feast was observed in England before the Norman invasion (1066).
The Council of London in 1129 decided in favour of the feast, and Gilbert, bishop of London, adopted it in his diocese. O. was a friend of Anselm (nephew of the Saint), abbot of Bury St. Edmund. He was sent to Rome around 1141 by King Stephen (1135-54) with his abbot to ask the Pope for the canonization of King Edward the Confessor. O. deserves great honour for the Epistolae ad Anselmum and to Warin, dean of Worcester, and the sermon De Conceptione Sanctae Mariae, in which he set out exactly and skilfully the theology of the Immaculate Conception. He also wrote the lives of Sts. Edward, Edmund and others. He has sometimes been confused with the hagiographer Osbern (who d. around 1090).
