PAGANI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. — ROSMINIANI (v.) in the Istituto della Carità (v.), b. at Borgomanero (Novara) on 10 May 1806, d. at Rome on 26 Dec. 1860. After serving as spiritual director at the Seminary of Novara, he entered the religious life and was sent to England with the other celebrated Rosminian Luigi Gentili, who died in the reputation of sanctity and played a leading part in the restoration of the hierarchy in England as counsellor to the Holy See. Together with Father Instancabile in his apostolate, Father Pagani governed the Institute in England until Rosmini’s death (1855).
A soul most gentle and ardent in charity and zeal for religion, he was a prolific and enlightened writer on ascetical subjects. This is shown by his works, among which the most popular is L’anima divota della Santissima Eucaristia (1835); L’anima amante (1848); Exercitia spiritualia (1856); La scienza dei Santi, 3 vols. (1853 in English; 1895 Italian trans.). The Rosminian bulletin Charitas (1935) published in installments a short Life of Fr. Giuseppe Bozzetti.
