PIERO DI PUCCIO. — An Umbrian painter of whom scant information survives. A document recalls him as having assisted Ugolino di Prete Ilario in 1360 and in the following years 1362–64 at Orvieto.

Here he carried out much of his activity as painter and mosaicist. To him belongs the mosaic on the façade of the Duomo, signed and dated: «Petrus de Putii de Urbe Vetere me fecit anno MCCCLXXVI»; it is also known that he served as master of the Mosaic and Painting Workshop for the year 1381. Around 1389–90 he was summoned to work in the Camposanto at Pisa, where he executed the Stories of Adam and Eve, Stories of Cain and Abel, Stories of Noah, which were damaged during the recent war events. His style in these works, harsh and provincial, does not prevent him in some scenes from achieving effects of considerable grandeur that reveal Giottesque influences. Returning to Orvieto in 1383, he painted a Resurrection in fresco on the Clock Tower. The last notice concerning him dates to 1394, on the occasion of some designs provided for a cross now in the Duomo.
