PIERO di PUCCIO. - Umbrian painter about whom little information is available. A document records him as an assistant of Ugolino di Prete Ilario, in 1360 and in the following years 1362-64, at Orvieto.

Here he carried out most of his activity as a painter and mosaicist. The mosaic on the facade of the Cathedral, signed and dated, is his: "Petrus de Puti de Urbe Vetere me fecit anno MCCCLXXVI"; it is also known that he was master of the Fabbrica del Musaico and of the Pittura for the year 1381. Around 1389-90 he was called to work in the Camposanto of Pisa, where he executed the Stories of Adam and Eve, Stories of Cain and Abel, Stories of Noah, which were damaged in the course of the recent wartime events. His style, harsh and provincial in these works, did not prevent him in some scenes from achieving effects of a remarkable grandeur that reveals Giottoesque suggestions. Having returned to Orvieto in 1383, he painted a frescoed Resurrection on the clock tower. The last record concerning him dates to 1394, on the occasion of some drawings supplied for a cross, now in the Cathedral.
