ROSSETTI, CARLO

CARLO ROSSETTI. — Cardinal, born in Ferrara in 1614, died in Faenza on 23 November 1681.

Apostolic nuncio to England in 1639, he was forced to leave the island because of the hostility of the Puritans, who attempted to assassinate him. He was then extraordinary nuncio to Cologne (1642) and legate of Urban VIII at the Peace Congress of Münster (1643). Bishop of Faenza from 1643 to 1676, where he held nine synods, he was created cardinal by Urban VIII in 1643; he was also bishop of Frascati (1676) and later of Porto and Santa Rufina (1680).
