PACCA, TIBERIO. - Prelate, b. at Benevento on 31 Aug. 1786, d. at Naples on 29 June 1837.
Nephew of Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca, who was most affectionate toward him, he followed him in the nunciature of Lisbon and shared with him his imprisonment in the fortress of Fenestrelle. Apostolic delegate at Civitavecchia in 1814, he distinguished himself by the fortunate interception of the correspondence of Cardinal Fesch and of Joachim Murat with Napoleon on the eve of the flight from Elba. His shrewd police skill made him a valuable informant on the activity of the sects and of the liberal movements within and beyond the borders of the Papal State. Governor of Rome from 1816, he was forced in 1820, because of excessive extravagance and serious indiscretions, to leave Italy. Having taken refuge in Switzerland and in France with the help of the Marquis of Montmorency, ambassador of France at Turin, he was able in Feb. 1835 to obtain the post of intendant general in the Ministry of the Interior of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Some information about alleged accomplices of the marquises Saluzzo, supplied by him, and the suspicion of intrigues, to which he would have lent himself, however, brought about after a short time his removal and the fall of the minister Antonio Tonduti dell'Escarena (19 Apr. 1835). Having retired to Naples, he died there of cholera.
