SANTORI (Santorio), Giulio Antonio. - Cardinal, b. June 6, 1532 in Caserta, d. May 28, 1602 in Rome. He studied civil law in Naples and became a lawyer, but, renouncing the world, he entered the clergy.

He was first vicar general of Cardinal Alfonso Carafa, archbishop of Naples, then archbishop of S. Severina in Calabria (May 6, 1566) and finally a cardinal of the Curia on May 17, 1570, where for 32 years he held important offices relating not only to the West but also to the East (prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, co-founder with Gregory XIII of the Greek College of St. Athanasius [1577]). He was twice close to the tiara in the Conclaves that produced Sixtus V and Clement VIII.

A man of vast culture, counselor to seven Popes, in addition to numerous liturgical, historical and juridical pamphlets, he left around his life and his offices very important detailed records: the Antobiografia; the Diario concittoriale, the Libri delle mie private udienze; in the field of liturgy he applied himself to the reworking of the Ritual (v. RITUALE ROMANO).
