Sibert of Beek (Beek)

SIBERT di BEKA (BEEK). - Carmelite theologian, b. at Beek (near Geldern, Rhineland) around 1260, d. at Cologne on 26 Dec. 1332, where, around 1280, he had taken the Carmelite habit. Having obtained his doctorate in theology (1316) at the University of Paris, he governed for many years the province of Lower Germany, taking part in the politics of his time; in the dispute between the duke of Brabant and the city of Brussels (1319), and in the conflict between the duke of Guelders and the Pope (1328), he succeeded in reconciling the two parties.

He intervened in the trial against Master Eccarlo (v.) and, in 1327, during the struggle between Emperor Ludovico il Bavaro and the Pope, wrote, in defence of papal right, a Reprobatio sex errorum against the Defensor Pacis of Marsilio Patavino. He also wrote: Quodlibeta I-II (ms. Vat. Borg., 39); Ordinale Carmelitarum, which became the basis of Carmelite liturgy (ed. by Ben. Zimmerman, Paris 1910), and other works on the history and privileges of his Order.
