UGUCCIONE OF PISA. - Medieval decretist and lexicographer, b. at Pisa in the first half of the 12th century, d. at Ferrara on 30 April 1210.

At the Studium of Bologna, where, after obtaining his doctorate, he taught canon law from 1178 to 1190, he shone as the most celebrated magister decretorum of his century. Among his disciples was distinguished Lothair of the Counts of Segni, the future pontiff Innocent III, who always preserved esteem and regard for him, as appears from the decretal letters that he dedicated and sent to him, while pope, later collected in the Liber Decretalium of Gregory IX. In 1190 he was named bishop of Ferrara. From 1197 to 1201, by order of the Pope, he attended at Nonantola to the reorganization of the celebrated abbey.

He is the author of a most celebrated Summa Decretorum (still unpublished), composed between 1187 and 1190, the most extensive, the most original and at the same time the most important work of the genre, which extended its influence as a supreme master to the whole Middle Ages. For causes XXIII-XXVI, which U. left without commentary, the work had several anonymous continuations: the principal one was made by John of God (ca. 1240). Also by U. are numerous important glosses on the Decretum, later inserted into the Glossa ordinaria on the Decretum itself.

U. was furthermore a meritorious cultivator of grammar and lexicography. In this field, his principal work are the Derivationes (unpublished), a kind of etymological lexicon, executed along the lines of the analogous work of Papias, which, although not free from the defects of the time, had great diffusion and authority in the Middle Ages and were Dante's dictionary. He also wrote, in the grammatical field, De dubio accento, the Rosarium and the Summa artis grammaticae, discovered by Grabmann.
