It surpassed the abbey and converted the church into a parish (1787), while the abbey buildings became the site of a large textile factory. In 1847 the church was shortened because part of it was in danger of collapse, and it received a new façade. V. is especially notable for the abbot JOHANNES of V. (1213-1345), who composed in five successive versions the *Liber certarum historiarum*, published multiple times (most recent edition by L. F. Schneider).
