Ad Dominici gregis curam
Bull convoking the Ecumenical Council of Mantua
XII.
Summons of an Ecumenical Council in the city of Mantua for the twenty-third day of the month of May, in the year 1537. Paul, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for the record of the future.
1 To the care and governance of the Lord's flock, by divine providence having been assumed, nothing do we desire more from our heart and have we besought from almighty God, than that His Church, committed to us, and so many heresies and errors long since sprung up in it, by the working grace of the Holy Spirit and our own effort, being purged, and its morals reformed for the better, restored to its due splendor and sincerity, we might see it render grateful obedience to God in holiness and justice; but yet that care touches us no less, when we consider and indeed perceive with our own eyes the Christian commonwealth, afflicted by intestine hatred of the faithful and the force and deceit of the unfaithful, to be daily more scattered and diminished.
2 § 1. To which appropriate remedies being applied 1 From the Vatican Registers and Raynald. continued Annals., vol. \\.
3 we, pressing forward, have altogether determined to celebrate a most holy ecumenical or universal council (which also, when we were in a lesser position, was greatly desired by us), at the very beginning of our pontificate; and not only have we spoken openly of this our steadfast will, but have also made known to our most beloved sons in Christ Charles, Emperor of the Romans, and other Christian kings and princes through letters and messengers of ours, and now, with the Lord as author, we decree to summon and from thence in the place and time declared below by us to celebrate, and finally to bring to the desired end: hoping and with God's help promising ourselves, through this so holy and likewise salutary remedy, not only all heresies and errors to be rooted out from the Lord's field, and the morals of the Christian people to be corrected, but also universal peace among the faithful to be established, and, an expedition having been made under the standards of the life-giving Cross against the unfaithful, to recover our kingdoms and lands occupied by them, and freeing innumerable captives, and the unfaithful themselves, God favoring, to be converted to our holy religion, and thus from the whole world coalescing into one and the same fold of the Lord in true faith, hope and charity, to live soberly and piously and justly, and thence from almighty God the crown of justice to be awaited.
4 kingdoms and lands occupied by them to be recovered, and innumerable captives to be freed, and the unfaithful themselves, God favoring, to be converted to our holy religion, and thus from the whole world coalescing into one and the same fold of the Lord in true faith, hope and charity, to live soberly and piously and justly, and thence from almighty God the crown of justice to be awaited.
5 § 2. This therefore perpetual and constant purpose of our mind upon the celebration of a universal council, proposed and determined, to the praise and glory of God, the salvation, honor and increase of His Church, we proceed to execute.
6 PAUL III, POPE
7 225 In the name of the holy and undivided Trinity, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, by the authority of almighty God and of the blessed Peter and Paul, His apostles, which we exercise on earth, by the counsel and consent of our venerable brothers, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, an ecumenical or universal and general council in the city of Mantua, a place safe, convenient, fertile and provided with an abundance of houses and good dwellings, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and thirty-seven, on the twenty-third day of the month of May, which will be Wednesday after the most sacred feast of Pentecost, to be begun and, as follows, to be continued, and with the Lord as author, to be ended, we announce, convoke, establish, declare and ordain.
8 § 3. To all and each of our venerable brothers, patriarchs, archbishops and bishops, and the rest...
9 and to bishops and beloved sons the abbots everywhere constituted, in virtue of the oath taken and holy obedience, and under the penalties established by law or custom or otherwise against those who do not come to the general council, commanding that they attend personally; the aforesaid emperor, kings, princes, dukes, marquises and others, who by law or custom ought to attend in the universal council, we invite and exhort through the bowels of the charity of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they themselves personally (which we would prefer), or if they cannot attend personally, through solemn ambassadors of theirs at a suitable time should attend this sacred council, to be celebrated in the aforesaid city of Mantua, as is stated above; yet we do not doubt that, if they consider how pleasing to us, and how especially necessary for the Christian commonwealth their pastoral presence in the said council will be, both the other aforesaid kings and princes, and Charles the emperor, and Francis the most Christian King of the French will be present there personally. § 4. Since Charles, for the zeal and love of holy faith and our own, both his own and that of his most serene brother Ferdinand, King of the Romans, and in the name of the electors and other orders of the sacred Roman Empire, for the celebration of the universal council, pressed upon Clement VII of happy memory, our predecessor, repeatedly and most earnestly; and when, by various disturbances of affairs and wars and other legitimate causes, and especially by the death of the aforesaid Clement, such a holy work and the good intention which our predecessor had for this same purpose was hindered from being effected, to us, on account of this our ready willingness offered to him and to all the aforesaid from the beginning of our pontificate, as is stated above, concerning the said council by us indicating and celebrating it, and recently in the general congregation of our aforesaid brothers, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, the conclusion decreed and declared, to which he gave fitting filial reverence, in the same name gave the greatest thanks.
10 § 5. But from the aforesaid King Francis, who also wrote letters full of piety and religion on this matter to the same Clement and the sacred college, such consent as we hoped for from a truly most Christian prince and a response conformable to our good will concerning this council business we have received.
11 § 6. And nevertheless we similarly beseech and exhort the same emperor, kings, princes and others aforesaid that, applying all effort and diligence, they effect that all and each persons existing in their kingdoms and dominions, who by law or custom ought to attend general councils, attend this council, ceasing from any legitimate impediment, concerning which they ought to be able to teach legitimately, personally, or otherwise through suitable nuncios, procurators or ambassadors having legitimate mandates, attend the aforesaid council, and remain in the city of Mantua until its conclusion and dissolution; and thus with a copious multitude of Christians gathered together, those things which pertain to the praise of God, the reformation and exaltation of the Church in morals, the complete extinction of heresies, the concord and salvation of the aforesaid faithful, and a general expedition against infidels, in the same council, God being the author and helper, may be salutarily ordained, etc. Conclusion. Let no one, etc. Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of the Lord's Incarnation one thousand five hundred thirty-six, on the fourth day of June, in the second year of our pontificate. Paul, bishop of the Catholic Church
