Apostolic letter on the reduction of feast days in the city and diocese of Rimini
Diminution of feasts in the city and diocese of Rimini.
To our venerable brother the bishop of Rimini.
Pius PP. VI.
1 Venerable brother, greetings and apostolic blessing. § 1. Since, as a certain matter is, as our predecessor St. Leo the Great says, such that nothing can be shaken by any reasoning, so many things are such that either on account of the necessity of circumstances, or on account of consideration of difficulties, it ought to be moderated, that condition always being observed, that in those things which either have been doubtful, or obscure, we know that what is to be followed is that which is found to be neither contrary to the precepts of the Gospel, nor adverse to the decrees of the holy Fathers: for this reason this holy Apostolic See, on account of its paternal benevolence toward all Christ's faithful, insofar as it has been permitted to it, has been accustomed to interpose its supreme authority in those matters which otherwise are prescribed for the greater increase of divine worship, or are converted by the growing coldness of charity in the hearts of some to idleness and luxury, or on account of the lack of things necessary for sustaining life are not without anguish of conscience despised.
2 § 2. Since, however, as has been set forth to Us on your behalf, it has become known to that same brotherhood of yours that in the city and diocese of Rimini calamities and hardships have so greatly increased on account of the misfortunes of these present times, that the wretched inhabitants and residents thereof, and especially those who eat their bread in the sweat of their brow, are very often compelled, though unwillingly, to neglect feast days and to devote themselves to mechanical labors and servile works for the sake of earning bread, and this has come about more easily on account of the increased number of feast days, and therefore We have been humbly entreated that We should deign to provide opportunely in these matters and to grant indulgence therein from apostolic benignity. § 3. We therefore, who wish to bring to Christ's faithful, as much as we are able with the Lord, a saving remedy rather for obtaining eternal salvation and for honestly sustaining human life, than to lead the poor to desperation through the more severe rigor of ecclesiastical discipline, desiring to follow the said inhabitants with special graces and favors, and absolving their individual persons from whatsoever excommunication, interdict, and other ecclesiastical censures, sentences, and penalties imposed in any manner and for whatever cause, if perchance they have incurred any, for this reason alone, and holding them to be absolved, inclined to these supplications; We commit and command to your brotherhood by these presents, that, the matters narrated being true, to all Christ's faithful of either sex existing in that same city and diocese of Rimini, that henceforth, excepting all Sundays, as well as the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the following feast of St. Stephen, the Circumcision, the Epiphany, the Paschal Resurrection and the following, Pentecost and the following, and Corpus Christi, and the Ascension, St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, and the Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul, and the commemoration of all saints; furthermore five feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate, namely the Purification, the Annunciation, the Assumption, the Nativity, and the Conception, as well as the feast of the patron or tutelary saint of any place for the people of that same place only on those feast days in which the full obligation of the precept remains; but on the remaining feasts, whether prescribed by this holy See or by the synodal constitutions of that same city and diocese, or for any other cause whatsoever, even on account of a vow made by their ancestors, which as to this part also We wish to be commuted by your authority apostolic through you, after hearing Mass, they may devote themselves to the laborious exercises of their crafts and to servile works without any scruple of conscience whatsoever; you shall grant and permit, and shall establish, command, and order by Our aforesaid apostolic authority. § 4. Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and general or special ones issued in universal, provincial, and synodal councils, and ordinances, as well as the statutes and customs of the aforesaid city and diocese and those places, even those strengthened by oath, apostolic confirmation, or other firmness; privileges also, indults, and apostolic letters to superiors and persons under whatsoever tenors and forms, and with whatsoever even derogatory clauses of derogations, and other most efficacious and unusual clauses, irritant and other decrees in general or in special, and in any manner whatsoever contrary to the aforesaid, granted, approved, and renewed. All and singular of which, holding their tenors as fully and sufficiently expressed in these presents and inserted word for word, otherwise remaining in their force, We specially and expressly derogate for this occasion only for the effect of the aforesaid, and all other things contrary whatsoever. Given at Rome at St. Peter's under the Fisherman's ring on the nineteenth day of May in the year one thousand seven hundred eighty-six, in the twelfth year of Our pontificate.

Pio PP. VI.
1 Venerabile fratello, salute e benedizione apostolica. § 1.
