ALESSI, ANDREA. - Dalmatian architect and sculptor, b. in Durazzo in 1425 and d. in Spalato between 1503 and 1507. He was trained in the school of Marco da Troia, in whose workshop he remained until 1443. Shortly afterwards he became an assistant to Giorgio Orsini. He lived and worked mainly in Spalato, having set up his own workshop there. His works include the chapel of St. Catherine in the church of St. Dominic in Spalato, the chapel of Sts. Jerome and Nicholas in St. John the Baptist at Arbe, and the baptistery of Traù. He collaborated with Giorgio Orsini on the Loggia dei mercanti in Ancona; he also worked with Niccolò Fiorentino (bell tower of the cathedral of Spalato, facade of St. Maria degli Agostiniani in the Tremiti islands). In 1488 he attended to the construction of the walls and the escarpment of the city of Spalato.
