ALESSI, ANDREA

ALESSI, ANDREA. — Dalmatian architect and sculptor, b. in Durazzo in 1425, d. in Spalato between 1503 and 1507. He was a pupil of Marco da Troia, in whose workshop he remained until 1443. Shortly afterward he became assistant to Giorgio Orsini. He lived and worked mainly in Spalato, where he established his own workshop. His works include the chapel of St. Catherine in the church of St. Dominic in Spalato, the chapel of SS. Jerome and Nicholas in St. John the Baptist in Arbe, and the baptistery of Traù. He collaborated with Giorgio Orsini on the Loggia dei Mercanti in Ancona; he also worked with Niccolò Fiorentino (bell tower of the cathedral of Spalato, façade of St. Mary of the Augustinians in the Tretimi islands). In 1488 he worked on the construction of the walls and the escarpment of the city of Spalato.
