ALESSI, ANDREA

ALESSI, ANDREA. – Dalmatian architect and sculptor, b. at Durazzo in 1425 and d. at Spalato between 1503 and 1507. He studied under Marco da Troia, remaining in his workshop until 1443. Shortly thereafter he became an assistant to Giorgio Orsini. He lived and worked mainly at Spalato, where he established his own workshop. His works include the chapel of S. Caterina in the church of S. Domenico at Spalato, the chapel of SS. Girolamo and Nicola in S. Giovanni Battista at Arbe, and the baptistery of Traù. He collaborated with Giorgio Orsini on the Loggia of the Merchants at Ancona; he also worked with Niccolò Fiorentino (the bell tower of the cathedral of Spalato, the façade of S. Maria degli Agostiniani in the Tremiti Islands). In 1488 he undertook the construction of the walls and the escarpment of the city of Spalato.
