Andrew of Giusto Manzini

ANDREW OF GIUSTO MANZINI. - Florentine painter. A pupil of Lorenzo Monaco, he first collaborated with Bicci di Lorenzo, then with Masaccio on the polyptych for the church of the Carmine in Pisa (1426); indeed, the two predella panels with stories of St. Julian and St. Nicholas in the State Gallery in Berlin belong to him. In 1437 he signed an Assumption and Saints in the Florentine Academy, and around 1445 he executed three frescoes with the Marriage of Mary, the Martyrdom and the Funeral of St. Stephen in the Bocchieri chapel (or rather of Tommasa dei Palei) in the cathedral of Prato. In his last works he was strongly influenced by Angelico and was not insensitive even to the researches of Domenico Veneziano. Among the major masters, however, he oriented himself with difficulty and with weak individuality; this often makes the catalogue of his works, which also includes cassone paintings, controversial and unstable.
