CANDIDUS, ALEXANDER. - Carmelite theologian of the Ancient Observance, b. at Ghent on an uncertain date and d. at Cologne on 31 Dec. 1555. His family name was Nicola Blankert. Having made his profession at Utrecht, he was sent to Cologne, where he obtained the degree of doctor in theology in 1546; not long afterwards (1551) he was ordinary professor of Theology, and later (1554), dean in the same University of Cologne. In the last years of his life, C. was prior of the convent at Cologne, and parish priest of the church of St. Nicholas. He was active and combative against Protestantism, particularly against Calvinism.
Sent in 1551 to the Council of Trent, as theologian of Mary of Austria, sister of Charles V, governess of the Netherlands, he delivered in that year two discourses at the sessions of 25 Oct. and of the fourth Sunday of Advent; discourses which were published that same year at Cologne: Iudicium Ioh. Calvini de sanctorum reliquiis collatum cum orthodoxorum S. Ecclesiae catholicae Patrum sententiis, and Oratio de retributione iustorum statim a morte. Nevertheless C. has remained more celebrated for an illustrated translation of the Bible, in Flemish, prepared with great diligence on the basis of the various Latin editions and far more exact in comparison with the preceding ones, which appeared at Cologne in 1547.
