COCHELET, ANASTASE. - Carmelite theologian, b. in 1551 at Mézières (Champagne), d. at Reims in 1624. He was a religious at the convent of Reims, doctor of theology at the University of Paris, subsequently prior of the convents of Reims and Paris, and finally provincial. A learned man and vigorous defender of the Catholic faith against Protestantism, a renowned preacher, and a member of the French League for the preservation of religious unity in France, he resisted Kings Henry III and IV, friends of the Huguenots, and was therefore obliged to take refuge in Belgium, where he remained from 1594 to 1617.
