CORRADO D'ASCOLI, Blessed. - Franciscan, b. at Ascoli on 18 Sept. 1234 to the nobles Francesco Milani and Agnese Saladini, d. there on 17 Apr. 1289. A companion of Girolamo Massi, later Nicholas IV, with whom he took the habit of the Friars Minor, he soon rose to fame for holiness and learning. He evangelized Libya, converting several thousand infidels, and, first among all, brought the little Moors to Europe to educate them. By Nicholas III he was sent together with Girolamo to Paris, to the king of France, to induce him to more peaceful sentiments toward the king of Spain, and to Paris he returned, a little later, to teach theology, arousing, on both occasions, great admiration, both in his teaching and in his preaching and in the exercise of charity. Summoned to Rome by his friend and confrere who had become pope, to receive the insignia of a cardinal, he died upon arriving at Ascoli. Pius VI confirmed his cult on 5 Febr. 1792.
