DE CAMILLIS, GIOVANNI (GIUSEPPE). - Basilian theologian, b. at Chios (Greece) on 7 Dec. 1641, d. on 22 Aug. 1706. He entered the Pontifical Greek College of Rome in 1656. In 1668 Propaganda Fide sent him to the region of Chimara (southern Albania) to assist the apostolic vicar Arcadio Stanila. Having returned to Rome (1672), he became a monk in the Ruthenian Basilian Congregation of the Most Holy Trinity, under the name Giuseppe, and held the office of procurator of his Congregation before the Holy See.

He was a writer at the Vatican Library and in 1677 he published in Italian the treatise on the spiritual life: La vita divina ritrovata fra i termini del tutto e del nulla. His other short works in Greek remained unpublished.

In 1690 he was elected titular bishop of Sebaste and sent to Munkačs as apostolic vicar of the Ruthenians of Kingdom of Hungary. He reestablished and spread the union, corrected abuses and composed a catechism.
