DUPRE, GIOVANNI. - Born in Siena on March 1, 1817, died in Florence on Jan. 10, 1882. A pupil in Florence of L. Magi and V. Cambi, he was also under the influence of Lorenzo Bartolini (v.), whose program, in opposition to Canova and Thorwaldsen, was to create images studied from life.
Among D.'s first works must be placed the Abel, executed in marble in 1842 for the Emperor of Russia (in bronze in the gallery of Modern Art in Florence), one of his best sculptures and characterized by the intense naturalistic representation of the subject. The following year he modeled the Cain, undoubtedly inferior, and then, in 1844, the Giotto for the porticoes of the Uffizi.
There then began his vast activity as a sculptor of funerary monuments in the cemeteries of Florence, Siena, Pisa, Bologna, etc., of honorary monuments and of sculptures of various subjects as well as portraits. Among his most famous works, besides those already mentioned, are to be counted the Sappho of the gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Adolorata and the Exaltation of the Cross for the facade of S. Croce in Florence (1860-61) and above all the Pietà in the Bichi-Ruspoli chapel in the cemetery of Siena. In this last sculpture, certainly among the most significant of his time, the strong, deeply human characterization of the subject does not completely veil the fifteenth-century scheme of the composition. - See pl.
