APRONIANO, cemetery of - Cubiculum with columns and stucco capitals - Rome.

CEMETERY OF APRONIANUS. - The Hieronymian Martyrology tells us (Dec. 25) that St. Eugenia was buried on the Via Latina in Rome in coemeterio Aproniani. And from the Notitia ecclesiarum we know that it was the third starting from Rome. Above it there was a basilica, and Adrian I (772-75) built there a women's monastery which he endowed richly. The catacomb, visited several times in the past, came to light again in 1937 and has since been partly excavated. It has three levels, but is not very extensive; it has revealed many inscriptions and some interesting cubicula, as well as a polychrome mosaic depicting the cycle of Jonah. A. must have been some wealthy Christian who owned that plot of land.
