FAMIANO, SANTO

FAMIANO, Saint. - B. at Cologne ca. 1090, d. 8 August 1150 at Gallese (Viterbo). Of a noble family, called Gerardo or Quardo at birth, in his youth he made a pilgrimage out of devotion to Rome and other sanctuaries of Italy and to St. James of Compostela, spending six years at it.

He became a Cistercian monk in the monastery of Oseira near the river Mifto in Spain. Made abbot, he soon left the office to continue his pilgrimages, especially to the Holy Places, where he remained three years, passing back through Rome. He had spent 42 years of his life on pilgrimage. He is said to have been canonized in 1154 by Adrian IV, who would have changed his name from Quardo to the Latin F.
