FRACASSINI, CESARE - Painter b. in Rome on 18 Dec. 1838, d. there on 13 Dec. 1868.
A pupil of the Accademia di S. Luca and of Minardi, drawn to the Romantic current he oriented himself toward compositions on historical subjects, while the nascent verismo found in him one of the first champions of a painting disciplined by reality. Despite the hybridism of these contrasting currents, F. was able to reconcile the contributions of different fashions and styles.

Evidence of this, in the field of sacred art, which he favored, is the canvas of the Martyrs of Gorkum (1867) in the Vatican Museum and, in the same collection, the painting for the beatification of Peter Canisius (1864). Pius IX gave him the task of decorating in fresco the triumphal arch and the walls of the basilica of St. Lawrence, but the master died when he had completed the arch and three panels: The Ordination of St. Stephen, St. Lawrence Distributing Alms to the Poor, St. Lawrence Presenting the Poor to Valerian. Of the series, completed by Mei, Grandi and Mariani, only one composition remains, The Ordination of St. Stephen, the others having been destroyed in the bombing of 19 July 1943.
