In the Vatican and in the same collection is the painting for the beatification of Peter Canisius (1864). Pius IX commissioned him to fresco the triumphal arch and the walls of the basilica of St. Lawrence, but the master died after completing the arch and three panels: *The Ordination of St. Stephen*, *St. Lawrence Distributing Alms to the Poor*, and *St. Lawrence Presenting the Poor to Valerian*. Of the series, completed by Mei, Grandi, and Mariani, only one composition remains, *The Ordination of St. Stephen*, the others having been destroyed in the bombing of 19 July 1943.
