GALLUZZI, FRANCESCO MARIA, Servant of God. —
Jesuit, b. 9 Jan. 1671 in Firenze, d. in Roma on 7 Sept. 1731. Having entered the Society in 1688, he taught letters and philosophy in various colleges; he was prefect of studies and confessor at the Collegio dei Maroniti in Roma; from 1706 he directed the oratory of S. Francesco Saverio, known as the Caravita; he preached the word of God in urban missions and was spiritual father to the young men of the Collegio Romano—duties which, apart from brief intervals, he carried out for approximately twenty-two years until his death.
G. also added to these an indefatigable and multifarious apostolic and charitable activity, such as to earn him the name of apostle of Roma and of youth. With all his strength he promoted the canonization of s. Luigi Gonzaga and spread his cult among young students.
Innumerable were the writings published by G., chiefly of hagiographical and ascetical content; among them were the life of Father Segneri the younger and that of the blessed Antonio Baldinucci, to whom he was bound even during life by intimate friendship and devotion. G., already honored by God with the gift of miracles during his lifetime, was still more so after his death. His body rests in the crypt of S. Ignazio in Roma; his cause of beatification was begun in 1917.
