GALLUZZI, Francesco Maria, Servant of God. -
Jesuit, b. 9 Jan. 1671 in Florence, d. in Rome on 7
Sept. 1731. Having entered the Society in 1688, he
taught letters and philosophy in various colleges; he was prefect
of studies and confessor at the College of the Maronites
in Rome; from 1706 he directed the oratory of St. Francis
Xavier, known as that of the Caravita, proclaimed the word of God
in the urban missions and was spiritual father of the
young men of the Roman College; duties which, apart from
brief intervals, he held for a period of about twenty-two
years until his death.

To these G. moreover added an indefatigable and multiform
apostolic and charitable activity, such as to merit the name
of apostle of Rome and of youth. He promoted with all his
strength the canonization of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and promoted his cult among young students.

Innumerable were the writings published by G., of
mainly hagiographic and ascetic content; among them
the life of Father Segneri the younger and of the blessed Antonio
Baldinucci, to whom he was bound already in life by intimate friendship
and devotion. G., already honored by God with the gift of miracles
in life, was so even more after death. His body
rests in the crypt of St. Ignatius in Rome; his cause of
beatification was begun in 1917.
