GIORGI, DOMENICO. - Prelate, historian, and liturgist, b. at Costa di Rovigo on 4 June 1690, d. at Rovigo on 21 July 1747. A priest (1773), librarian of the library of Card. G. R. Imperiali, abbot of S. Maria di Saccolongo (1727), he was a close associate of Innocenzo XIII, Benedetto XIII, Clemente XII, and Benedetto XIV, who appointed him his domestic prelate. He devoted himself to learned historical and liturgical research.
Of his numerous works, only the following need be mentioned: De antiquis Italiae metropolitibus (Rome, 1722); Trattato sopra gl'abiti sacri del Sommo Pontefice di Roma (ibid., 1724); De liturgia romani Pontificis in solemni celebratione missarum (3 folio vols., ibid., 1731, 43, 44); De Monogrammate Christi (ibid., 1738, refuting Basnage); the edition of the Martyrologium Adonis (ibid., 1745); and the annotations to the edition of Baronio’s Annales, edited by Mansi at Lucca (1738–59). Several of his manuscripts are preserved in the Biblioteca Casanatense.
