GODIN, GUILLAUME-PIERRE. – Dominican cardinal, born at Bayonne around 1260, died at Avignon on 4 June 1356. A religious in his native city, he studied at Brives, taught at Orthez (1281), Bordeaux (1282), Condom (1283, 1290), Montpellier (1284–86, 1292), Bayonne (1287), Toulouse, and Paris. He was provincial of Provence (1302–1303) and then of Toulouse (1303–1304). Master of theology in 1304, he taught in Paris (1304–1305), where he held a disputation with Duns Scotus. From 1306 to 1312 he was Master of the Sacred Palace. On 23 December 1312 he was created cardinal with the title of St Cecilia; in 1317 he was transferred to the suburbicarian see of Sabina.
He enjoyed great influence with Popes Clement V, John XXII, and Benedict XII, who showered him with honors and benefices and entrusted him with various diplomatic missions (e.g., the legation to Spain). He was entrusted with directing the proceedings for the examination of Ubertino da Casale’s doctrine. He was one of the principal representatives of Thomism in an age when attempts were also being made within the Dominican Order to reach a compromise with heterogeneous theological doctrines. His best-known work is the Lectura Thomasina (preserved in various manuscripts), a commentary on the Sentences demonstrating his fidelity to Aquinas. Also preserved is a Quaestio on the principle of individuation and a Tractatus de causa immediata ecclesiasticae potestatis (Paris 1506, published under the name of Pietro da Palude).
