GODIN, GUILLAUME-PIERRE. - Dominican cardinal, b. at Bayonne c. 1260, d. at Avignon on 4 June 1336. He entered the religious life in his native city, studied at Brives, and taught at Orthez (1281), Bordeaux (1282), Condom (1283, 1290), Montpellier (1284-86, 1292), Bayonne (1287), Toulouse, and Paris. He served as Provincial of Provence (1302-1303) and then of Toulouse (1303-1304). Made Master of Theology in 1304, he taught at Paris (1304-1305) where he engaged in a disputation with Duns Scotus. From 1306 to 1312 he was Master of the Sacred Palace. On 23 December 1312 he was created cardinal with the title of S. Cecilia, and in 1317 transferred to the suburbicarian see of Sabina.
He exercised great influence over the popes Clement V, John XXII, and Benedict XII, who showered him with honors and benefices and entrusted him with various diplomatic missions (e.g., the legation to Spain). He was placed in charge of the process for examining the doctrine of Ubertino da Casale. He was one of the principal representatives of Thomism at a time when even within the Dominican Order attempts were being made to compromise with alien theological doctrines. His best-known work is the *Lectura Thomasina* (preserved in several manuscripts): a commentary on the *Sentences* that demonstrates his fidelity to Aquinas. Also preserved are a *Quaestio* on the principle of individuation and a *Tractatus de causa immediata ecclesiasticae potestatis* (Paris 1506, published under the name of Peter of Palude).

GODOLIA (Heb. Gēdhaljāh[u]) “greatness of Jahweh.” - A leader of the party favoring accommodation with the Babylonians and the first governor of Judah after the disastrous war of 588-86 B.C., which ended with the destruction of Jerusalem and the blinding of King Zedekiah. G. was the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan (Jer. 39:14).
