GRAMATICA (della GRAMATICA), ANTIVEDUTO. - Roman painter; from a family originally from Siena. Born ca. 1577, died in Rome on 13 January 1626. His early works show him as a Mannerist oriented toward Barocci; at a more advanced period he appears as a Caravaggist of little grace but notable vigor.
From his first period there survives the altarpiece of the high altar in the Church of St. Stanislaus in Rome with the Savior among Polish Saints (ca. 1594); his late period can be illustrated by the Vision of St. Romuald in the church of the Camaldolese near Frascati, his masterpiece (ca. 1619), by the Nativity in the church of St. James in Augusta in Rome (ca. 1620), and by St. Luke Painting the Virgin in the church of Sts. Luke and Martina in Rome (ca. 1624), copied from a painting traditionally attributed to Raphael, now preserved in the Academy of St. Luke. Many paintings have recently been attributed to him, sometimes on slight grounds. The altarpiece at St. Mary of the Scala in Rome, painted by A. G. in 1602, is now seen replaced by an eighteenth-century copy.
