JACOBINI, DOMENICO. - Cardinal, born in Rome on 3 September 1837, died there on 3 February 1900. Ordained a priest, he carried on a notable activity. An ardent supporter of Catholic Action and of the apostolate of the laity, he was among the founders of the Circle of St. Peter, of the Primaria Società cattolica promotrice di buone opere and of the Artistica Operaia, and he was greatly deserving of the Società degli interessi cattolici, of the Federazione Piana, and of the Union for administrative elections.
A student of the social question, he constantly directed his action toward the spiritual and material elevation of the working class. After having been secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, he was appointed in 1881, by Leo XIII, titular archbishop of Tyre and secretary of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, and ten years later he was sent as apostolic nuncio to Portugal. The same Pontiff, in the Consistory of 30 November 1896, created him cardinal and, in 1899, called him to succeed Parocchi in the vicariate of Rome.
