Domenico Jacobini. — Cardinal, born in Rome on 3 September 1837, died there on 3 February 1900. After ordination to the priesthood, he carried out notable activity. A zealous supporter of Catholic Action and of lay apostolate, he was among the founders of the Circolo di S. Pietro, of the Primaria Società cattolica promotrice di buone opere, and of the Artistica Operaia, and he rendered great service to the Società degli interessi cattolici, the Federazione Piana, and the Unione per le elezioni amministrative.
A student of the social question, he directed his efforts constantly toward the spiritual and material elevation of the working class. After serving as secretary of the Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, he was named in 1881 by Leo XIII titular archbishop of Tyre and secretary of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, and ten years later was sent as apostolic nuncio to Portugal. The same Pontiff, in the Consistory of 30 November 1896, created him cardinal and, in 1899, called him to succeed Parocchi as vicar of Rome.
