LA TOUR D'AUVERGNE, Henri-Alphonse-Godefroy-Bernard, Prince of La Tour d'Auvergne and of Lauragais. - French politician, b. 21 Oct. 1823 in Paris, d. 5 May 1871 at the castle of Angliera (Vienne). He entered the diplomatic career at the age of 18, as an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In Apr. 1849 he landed at Civitavecchia together with the aide-de-camp of General Oudinot, with the task of reassuring the population about French intentions and of arranging everything for the peaceful landing of the expeditionary corps.
Minister of France at Weimar, at Florence, at Turin in 1859-60, ambassador at Berlin. Of rigidly Catholic sentiments, in Oct. 1862 he succeeded La Valette at the embassy in Rome. There he found relations between France and the Holy See rather tense, above all because of the attitude of his predecessor, who made no secret of his hostility toward the Holy See. The new ambassador, charged with making clear to the Pope the necessity of recognizing at least de facto, if not de iure, the occupation of a part of the pontifical territory by the Kingdom of Italy, also advised the implementation of reforms in the State of the Church. Relations between the two parties improved, but the Holy See was too deluded about the supposed change in French policy after the advent of Drouyn de Lhuys at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The position of L. T. d'A., a person most agreeable to Pius IX, became more difficult from day to day, and the prince greeted with relief in Oct. 1863 his transfer to London. Appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1869, he became in July 1870 ambassador at Vienna and negotiated a tripartite Austro-French-Italian agreement against Prussia, an agreement that was not concluded because of the intransigence of Napoleon III on the Roman question.
