MADRID (Madridius), CRISTÓBAL. - Spanish Jesuit, ascetical writer, b. at Daimiel (diocese of Toledo) ca. 1503, d. at Rome on 13 Aug. 1573. He was accepted into the Society of Jesus in 1550 by the founder himself, St. Ignatius. For many years a superior, he governed the professed house of Rome and was assistant for Italy (1555).

The little work that made him famous was a short treatise on the frequent use of the Eucharist, De frequenti usu sanctissimi Eucharistiae sacramenti libellus (Naples 1556, Rome 1557). It was the first work on frequent Communion printed by a Jesuit (a similar little work had already been prepared by Fr. N. Bobadilla, at the urging of St. Ignatius, in 1551, but it remained unpublished until 1933). M. made use of the material prepared by Fr. A. Salmerón, polishing the style and ordering the matter for the first edition of Naples; revising it better and correcting it for the edition of Rome; it had repeated editions and translations in Italy, Belgium and France, at the first spread of the Calvinist heresy.
