MARCONI, ROCCO. - Painter, b. probably in Treviso and d. in Venice shortly before 13 May 1529. The first records of his activity go back to 1504, and an altarpiece in SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, depicting the Redeemer between Sts. Andrew and Peter, is signed with his name.

The work that brought him the greatest renown, and of which a dozen replicas survive (in Venice, Brescia, Rome, Berlin) along with countless copies, is the rich half-length composition of Christ and the Adulteress (the most vivid example is the one preserved in the former Royal Palace of Venice). Besides a St. John the Baptist between Sts. Peter, Paul, Mark and Jerome, in S. Cassiano in Venice, the Deposition in the Accademia in Venice also appears significant, not least for the clarity of its landscape background; it is believed to have been inspired, if not partly executed, by Giovanni Bellini, of whom M. was almost certainly a pupil. He was not insensitive to the great coloristic reform of Giorgione, but his varied and pleasing tonalities come rather closer to those of Palma il Vecchio. In compositional and formal respects, M. betrays a certain limp conventionality and inconsistency of stylistic handling.
