ORSINI, Giovanni, Blessed. - Bishop of Traù, b. in Rome in 1032, d. at Traù in 1110-11. A member of a pontifical legation sent to Dalmatia by Alexander II to quell a schism, he was elected bishop of Traù by the cardinal legate John and consecrated by the bishop of Salona (1064).

With the blessed O., Traù detached itself from Byzantium and entered the orbit of Rome, only to depend politically now on Venice and now on Hungary. The blessed O. was distinguished for his great spirit of prayer and for pastoral zeal; in the diocese he founded the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter. He took an active part in the affairs of the city, which he saved from destruction by King Coloman (1105) and for which he obtained confirmation of the rights of the population (1108).

He was buried in the cathedral of St. Lawrence, where later an artistic chapel was erected in his honor, the work of A. Alessi and N. Fiorentino (1468-72). He is venerated as patron of the city, with his feast on 14 Nov.
