PATRIZI, FRANCESCO SAVERIO

PATRIZI, FRANCESCO SAVERIO. — Eminent exegete, born in Rome on 19 June 1797, of an illustrious Sienese family, died there on 23 April 1881. He entered the Society of Jesus on 12 November 1814. He was professor of Hebrew and Sacred Scripture at the Collegio Romano and at Louvain.

He contributed to the study of biblical introduction and was among the first to publish a Synopsis of the Gospels (book II of the De Evangelii) in Greek and Latin. With regard to the New Testament, he rejected the existence of types in it, distinguished Mark from John Mark, and assigned the composition of Mark to the years 42–44. The De Evangelii still renders good service today, especially on historical and chronological questions. In the exegesis of the Old Testament, P. maintained (1853) the Mariological sense and the Immaculate Conception in the Protoevangelium; his contribution to the literal exegesis of the Psalms was excellent.

Among his major works: Institutio de interpretazione Bibliorum (Rome 1862, 1876); Bibliorum quaestionum decas (there 1877): these two works reproduce, with improvements and additions, respectively books I and II of De interpretatione Scripturarum Sacrarum (I, Διδαστικός, Rome 1844; II, Παραδειγματικός, there 1844), which in turn reproduce De Sacrarum Scripturarum sensibus (1838 and 1840) and Selectarum questionum de Vetere Testamento, fasciculus 1 (1841), both only printed by polygraph. In addition: De Evangelii libri tres (Freiburg im Breisgau 1852–53 [book II separately, under the title Evangelium διὰ τεσσαφῶν seu Quattuor Evangeliorum contextus, there 1852]); several dissertations printed separately, including Della descrizione universale mentovata da s. Luca (Rome 1876), in which he modifies the opinion expressed in the book. Also noteworthy: De consensu utriusque libri Ma-

chabaeorum (Rome 1856); In Ioannem commentarium (there 1857); In Marcum commentarium (there 1862); In actus Apostolorum commentarium (there 1867); Cento salmi tradotti e commentati (there 1875).
