PRÓCORO (Prochorus, Πρόγορες). — One of the seven deacons (Act. 6:5) ordained by the Apostles for the service of the community of Jerusalem (ibid. 6:1–6), third in the sequence after Stefano and Filippo. He is not mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament.
An unverifiable tradition is said to have had him ordained bishop of Nicomedia in Bithynia by s. Pietro. The Historia Prochori Christi discipuli, de vita B. Ioannis Apostoli, included in the Magna Bibliotheca Patrum (I, Cologne 1618, pp. 49–69), is a fabric of legends and errors.
