PROCHORUS (Prochorus, Πρόχορος). - One of the seven deacons (Acts 6:5) ordained by the Apostles for the service of the community of Jerusalem (ibid. 6:1-6), third in the series after Stephen and Philip. He is not mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament.
An unverifiable tradition would say he was ordained bishop of Nicomedia in Bithynia by St. Peter. The Historia Prochori Christi discipuli, de vita B. Ioannis Apostoli, received in the Magna Bibliotheca Patrum (I, Cologne 1618, pp. 49-69), is a fabric of legends and errors. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on April 9, as a martyr at Antioch: the Greeks on July 28.
