ROLANDO OF CREMONA. - Dominican, b. in Cremona at the end of the 12th century, d. in Bologna in 1259. Magister artium at the University of Bologna, he became a Dominican there in 1219; in 1226 he founded a convent in Cremona; in 1228 he obtained his doctorate in theology in Paris, the first Dominican chair.
Having returned to Italy (1233), he combined theological activity with that of preacher and inquisitor, exposing his life to serious danger; in his last years he certainly taught in Bologna. He wrote a Summa theologica (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, cod. lat. 735); the treatises De Incarnatione and De virtutibus, which are missing from the Paris codex and are preserved in the Biblioteca civica of Bergamo (cod. 9, 13); and a commentary on the book of Job (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, cod. lat. 405). In these works R. shows a vast and sure command not only of Holy Scripture but also of philosophy. More inclined to positive study than to speculation, he displayed an encyclopedic and practical mentality akin to that of St. Albert the Great, treating of medicine, geography, mathematics, astronomy, magic, and witchcraft.
