ROLANDO of CREMONA. — Dominican, born at Cremona at the end of the 12th century, died at Bologna in 1259. Magister artium at the University of Bologna, he became a Dominican there in 1219; in 1226 he founded a convent at Cremona; in 1228 he obtained his doctorate in theology at Paris, becoming the first Dominican professor.

After returning to Italy (1233), he combined his theological activity with that of preacher and inquisitor, exposing his life to serious danger; in his final years, he certainly taught at Bologna. He wrote a Summa theologica (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, cod. lat. 735); the treatises De Incarnatione and De virtutibus, which are lacking from the Paris codex and are preserved in the Biblioteca civica of Bergamo (cod. 9, 13); and a commentary on the Book of Job (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, cod. lat. 405). In these works R. displays a broad and secure knowledge not only of Sacred Scripture, but also of philosophy. More inclined toward positive study than speculation, he showed an encyclopedic and practical mentality akin to that of s. Alberto Magno, treating of medicine, geography, mathematics, astronomy, magic, and witchcraft.
