ROSSI, GIACINTO. - Dominican theologian, b. at Diano Sorreta on 22 Feb. 1826, d. at Genoa on 29 Jan. 1899. A religious at Faenza in 1844, he studied at Bologna, where he graduated in 1851. He taught at Ferrara (1851-52), Imola (1852-56), Bologna (1856-66), where he was also regent of the Studium (1863-66). He was master in theology from 1862.

When the Bolognese convent was suppressed (1866), he had to take refuge in Genoa, where he devoted himself to preaching. He was one of the first ten Italian members of the Academy of St. Thomas. On 16 Aug. 1881 he was created titular bishop of S. Maria di Leuca (Cyprus) and appointed by Leo XIII as rector of the Catholic University of Louvain; on 18 Nov. 1881 he was transferred to the episcopal see of Luni.

A profound connoisseur of the doctrine of the Aquinate, he left various writings: Doveri dei cattolici nelle presenti condizioni d'Italia (Bologna 1861); Conforti e speranze (ibid. 1862); Spiritualità dell'anima umana (Genoa 1876); Catechismo e ateismo (ibid. 1878); 57 pastoral letters, rich in doctrine.
