ROSSI, Giacinto. — Dominican theologian, b. at Diano Sorreta on 22 Feb. 1826, d. at Genoa on 29 Jan. 1899. Entered the religious life at Faenza in 1844, studied at Bologna, where he graduated in 1851. He taught at Ferrara (1851–52), Imola (1852–56), Bologna (1856–66), where he was also regent of the Studium (1863–66). He became master in theology in 1862.
With the suppression of the Bologna convent (1866), he was forced to take refuge in Genoa, where he devoted himself to preaching. He was one of the first ten Italian members of the Academy of St Thomas. On 16 Aug. 1881 he was created titular bishop of S. Maria di Leuca (Cyprus) and assigned by Leo XIII as rector of the Catholic University of Louvain; on 18 Nov. 1881 he was transferred to the episcopal see of Luni.
A profound connoisseur of the doctrine of Aquinas, he left various writings: *Doveri dei cattolici nelle presenti condizioni d'Italia* (Bologna 1861); *Conforti e speranze* (ibid. 1862); *Spiritualità dell'anima umana* (Genoa 1876); *Catechismo e ateismo* (ibid. 1878); 57 pastoral letters, rich in doctrine.
