SIMEON, Archbishop of Thessalonica. - Byzantine theologian, polemicist and liturgist, d. at Thessalonica in March 1429. About his life it is known only that after having been a monk he succeeded the metropolitan Gabriel around 1418 and that he died six months before the fall of Thessalonica into the hands of the Turks.
Among his writings the principal ones are a dialogue against all heresies and a treatise on the Holy Rites, that is, on the Sacraments. To these two works are to be added the opuscules On the Divine Temple, Exposition of the Creed, Declaration of the Constantinopolitan Creed, Treatise on the Priesthood, 83 answers addressed to Gabriel metropolitan of Pentapolis, and some poems and prayers. S. is to be numbered among the great Byzantine writers. Generally speaking his Trinitarian, Christological and sacramental doctrine is profound and sound, except for those points in which the polemicist has overpowered the theologian. S. is in fact an ardent Palamite, he fought against the Latins and together with Nicholas Cabasilas he is the greatest champion of the Byzantine opinion on the epiclesis as the form of the Most Holy Eucharist.
