SIMEON OF POLIRONE, Saint. - Hermit at St. Benedict of Polirone (Mantua), b. in Armenia, d. at Polirone on 26 July 1016. He was canonized by Benedict VIII (v. CANONIZZAZIONE, III, col. 577).

Having contracted marriage only to please his father, he abandoned his family and his wife, withdrawing into solitude among the monks of St. Basil. Then he began a long series of pilgrimages to visit holy places or holy relics. Thus he was at Jerusalem, at Rome (983), at Pisa, at Lucca, at Piacenza, at Vercelli, at Turin, in England, in France and elsewhere. During his wanderings, by his examples, prayers and miracles, he converted many sinners. No longer able to endure the hardships of long journeys, he finally returned to Italy, reducing himself to the eremitical life among the monks of St. Benedict of Polirone, where he died a holy death. A short time before his death, however, he was at Parma to attend the translation of St. Felicola in the church of St. Paul. Thus the Vita, which is not always reliable. Feast on 26 July.
