STANISLAUS KOSTKA, Saint. - Jesuit, b. in the family castle of Rostkow (Prasnysz, Poland) on 28 Oct. 1550, d. in Rome on 15 Aug. 1568.
Of a family of the highest Polish nobility, piously educated by his mother, who had seen his future sanctity in a dream, he went with his brother Paul to Vienna for his studies at the Jesuit College. Having exchanged the fathers' boarding house for the home of a heretic, and being maltreated to death by his brother, he was comforted by the Communion brought to him by angels and healed by the apparition of the Virgin, who enjoined him to enter the Society of Jesus. To carry out this order, he fled from home, pursued in vain by his brother, who saw him but did not recognize him, and went on to Dillingen, whence St. Peter Canisius sent him to Rome, to place him out of reach of his relatives' search. On 28 Oct. 1567 he was received by St. Francis Borgia into the novitiate of S. Andrea al Quirinale. Of angelic purity, of a lively devotion to the Eucharist and to Mary, of lofty contemplation, he did not take long to leave the earth and fly to heaven. Beatified in 1670, he was canonized in 1726. ICONOGRAPHY
He is depicted with a youthful appearance, dressed in the habit of the Society of Jesus; representations of the Saint in the act of receiving the Host of the Most Holy Sacrament from an angel are frequent. The Saint's features have come down to us through his portrait painted in 1568, the year of his death, by Scipione Delfini (Château de St-Symphorien d'Ozon, Isère, France).

in a painting from the early years of the seventeenth century.
In the same chapel a sculpture in black and white marble, the work of Pierre Legros (v.), depicts St. S. on his deathbed. In one of the rooms preceding the chapel, 11 watercolors by Fra' Andrea Pozzo are to be seen, with the legend and the miracles of the Saint.
