THOMAS OF CORI, Blessed. - Franciscan, in the world Francesco Antonio Placidi, b. at Cori on 4 June 1655, d. at Bellegra on 11 Jan. 1729.
He received the religious habit on 7 Feb. 1677 near Orvieto, with the name T. Having completed his philosophical and theological studies in the convent of S. Maria del Paradiso in Viterbo and been ordained a priest in 1683, on 19 July of that year he obtained the license to preach. Toward the end of 1683 his superiors sent him to Orvieto as vice master of novices; in 1684 he was in the convent of S. Francesco near Bellegra, established the year before as a retreat house for the Roman province. From that year the name and work of T. are linked to that retreat house, where the religious, according to T.'s design, were to "exercise themselves more greatly in the ways of the spirit for the salvation of their own souls and of their neighbor." T. wrote the statutes of the retreat house, suited to procuring the religious perfection of individuals and to promoting the apostolate among the people, which in the General Chapter of the Order, held at Murcia in Spain, at Pentecost 1756, were imposed on all the retreat houses. The retreat house of Bellegra attracted religious from various provinces, so that in 1703, in the same Roman province, a second retreat house had to be founded at Palombara Sabina, but afterward they were founded throughout Italy, particularly through the work of his disciple St. Teofilo da Corte (v.). T. exercised the priestly ministry extensively, traveling through the towns of the Sublacense, the Tiburtino and the Prenestino, particularly through sacred preaching and through hearing the confessions of the faithful. Although of frail health, he practiced continuous penance, made more vivid by the strictest poverty. On 3 Sept. 1786 Pius VI declared him blessed, and in 1827 the Municipality of Rome numbered him among its heavenly patrons. Feast on 11 Jan.
